Botanica Lucida

Plant-based sculptural works activated by light

These works are made from plant-based bioplastics—materials derived from agar, glycerin, and botanical matter—developed as part of an ongoing shift toward more environmentally responsible studio practices.

Each element interacts with light—filtering, holding, and releasing it—so the work changes with time, movement, and attention.

Botanica Lucida begins with a liquid formula that is poured into individual silicone molds. The formula has been refined over 3+ years of research and development to a create stable, color-fast, antimicrobial material that is suitable for contemporary fine art.

Each cast requires multiple layers. Botanical inclusions are included in the final layers and thoroughly sealed with the same formula.

Once stable, the elements are removed from their molds and further dried in a tent with controlled temperature and humidity.

Each element is further worked by hand to create the desired form.

Elements are mounted onto carbon steel wires with a clear permanent adhesive.

Each element is installed as specified by the design created by Kelly in collaboration with the collector, curator, or client.
