In 2021 I started experimenting with alternatives to toxic and high-carbon materials like resin and glass. In early 2023 I began to work with natural polymer bioplastics. NP bioplastics aren’t plastic in the traditional sense (e.g., not petroleum-based), but they are ‘plastic-like’ in that they can be translucent or opaque, flexible or rigid, and long-lasting.
Translucency, illumination, and plant-based color are carriers of ecological memory. The elements function as contemporary reliquaries — holding traces of botanical life while emphasizing permeability, vulnerability, and transformation. The work proposes a circular studio ethic: materials designed to be re-melted, re-cast, composted, or returned to use. This approach prioritizes care in making, while inviting us to imagine beauty, wonder, and responsibility coexisting. Sustainability is presented not as austerity, but as abundance—rich with color, texture, and sensory engagement.
The title is a nod to light as an active element in the work, shadows are a form of drawing on the wall, each element a tiny snapshot of the natural world. Light operates as both material and collaborator, activating the work through time, movement, and changing conditions.
